Default Should Microsoft release a handheld gaming console?

I am sure I am not the only one wondering about this. Both Nintendo and Sony have mobile consoles, but it seems Xbox is stepping back on this one. Surely, there is a list of risks attached to releasing these, but wouldn't it be worth it? Especially taking Microsoft's success into account?

Microsoft's mobile gaming with smartphones is not doing very well right now. Sure, they have their smartphones, and soon their Surface tablets, but those are not specifically designed for gaming. Plus their game selection in that department is simply mediocre.

There is smartglass coming, but that is more of an extension to the Xbox 360. I would love to see Microsoft bring something good to the table in this market. What do you guys think?

While it might be cool I don't think it would (or should) ever come to fruition.

They want their phone line to take off. They also want the Surface, smartglass, xbox, windows 8 to be practically interchangeable. I don't think they should do ANYTHING that may take away from what they are trying to do with those. Hell the Vita and DS are under performing due to competition from iOS and android.

I could see some sort of 5" MS device that has real controls on it. It would be running WP7 (or whatever they call it now) and be focused on gaming (and not have phone features).

Don't think that is very likely though

So what you envision, is pretty much like a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, but with WP7 instead? Hmmm...

Was thinking more like the Galaxy Note running WP7 but yea. So far WP7 has only been on 'mid-range' phones as far as specs go. They need a power house phone (they dont even have a dual-core if I'm not mistaken)

Well the thing is Microsoft and its partners are not focusing on gaming on Windows Phone. They focus on the device's speed, simplicity and functionality. That is why most of their advertising boasts the devices' features and how smooth and fast they are. They never really mention gaming.

Also, even if they did make a powerhouse, it would not make a difference as apps and games are scarce in the platform. And the higher specs wouldn't really make a significant difference in the phone experience, as even low-end Windows Phone devices can run the OS without a hiccup.

I have used devices from the HTC Trophy and Lumia 700 all the way up to the Titan II and the Lumia 900. The higher end devices are nicer due to the screen and data speeds. The difference in performance is really minimal to absent, though. Windows Phone software is really that polished, it doesn't NEED the processors that Android devices have. Of course, if Micorosft decided to cater hard-core gamers, that would change.

Good points.... I'm leaning towards them not bothering with the platform at all

I imagine Microsoft has considered entering the handheld fray considering how successful both Nintendo and Sony have been. It would seem though Microsoft has decided that the time is not yet right to do so and considering how the Xbox One will be the company's third console and there is no sign of a Microsoft gaming handheld, there may never be a "right" time. The company must not see it as being something worthy of pursuing. Perhaps this will all change if the Xbox One does extremely well this generation and Microsoft manages to expand its marketshare among gamers.

I agree with NightAngel, Microsoft appears to be more concern with building a connection between their current line of electronic devices. So, I don't think a handheld would sound profitable for Microsoft. Look at the playstation vita. As cool of a handheld that it is. If there is no Pokemon, Zelda or Mario then there is no chance for other handhelds to compare to Nintendo's success.

I say no, they led the way this console generation, keep it simple, and focus on what you've been doing all along.
